American-born Mary Teasley converted to Islam and, by 1974, had changed her name to Amina Wadud. She become fluent in Arabic and earned her Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in Arabic and Islamic Studies. After graduation, Wadud spent time studying and teaching in both Libya and Malaysia.
